"On June 15, 2005, the salaried and management personnel of Merisant attended a team-building event contracted at Chicagoland Motor Speedway with Richard Petty Driving Experience. Each employee was assigned to a race team and served as a pit crew member. By participating in a simulated NASCAR racing event, we hoped to learn more about how to work together as a team.
In an effort to capitalize on this unique opportunity, we secured Mr. Ed Rensi to speak to us about teamwork. As former CEO of McDonald's and current team owner of two Busch series racing teams, we hoped Mr. Rensi would be able to motivate and inspire our staff to achieve new levels of cooperation and cohesiveness. Mr. Rensi exceeded our hopes and gave us that "over the top" experience our group needed.
Mr. Rensi spoke to us about commitment to the job and to the team. He talked about consequences and rewards for everyone involved in a team effort. He told us about the courage and discipline it takes to perform as a team member and as a team leader. He did this by sharing examples from his own life and career. He offered to us his never-ending insight into the nature of human behavior and organizational behavior.
At the conclusion of Mr. Rensi's presentation, our group talked about our experiences of working as a pit crew. We talked about how we can translate what we learned into the increased performance, efficiency, and cohesiveness we need. A comment may have started off with an example from the racing event but it was followed up with this statement more times than I could count: "It's like Mr. Rensi said..." Two weeks after our event, I am still hearing, "It's like Mr. Rensi said..." in various conversations throughout our facility. Mr. Rensi's address to our group has given us a giant step forward in helping us become the team we need to be and want to be.
Without any reservations whatsoever, I would recommend Ed Rensi to speak to any group, in any setting, for any reason. He not only shares what he knows, he shares in the context of who he is...a man who genuinely cares about helping people and organizations experience growth and development."
